Get to Know Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sam Sukkar

Plastic surgeon Dr. Sam Sukkar is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
As a plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas, Dr. Sukkar focuses on a wide variety of aesthetic treatments, ranging from liposuction and tummy tucks to breast augmentation and facial rejuvenation. With demand for cosmetic surgery at one of the highest levels in recent history, he says staying up-to-date with the most advanced devices and approaches is essential for treating patients. He has been selected to Houston Magazine’s "Top Doctors for Women" on several occasions.
Throughout his training and career, Dr. Sukkar has been published on a broad range of topics in plastic surgery, both aesthetic and reconstructive. Dr. Sukkar firmly believes in the importance of continuing medical education (CME) and regularly attends plastic surgery meetings in the US and around the world.
DRE caught up with Dr. Sukkar to discuss patient safety and his practice in Houston.
Q & A with Dr. Sukkar
You were asked to speak at ASAPS on the topic of patient safety. What are the main topics in patient safety?
I was named to the Patient Safety Committee for ASAPS in New York in April. We will be addressing multiple topics including: choosing a doctor appropriate for your procedure, the importance of Board Certification in plastic surgery and certification of the operating room where your procedure will be performed.
Your facility maintains the latest technology. Does this tie in with patient awareness/safety?
Maintaining equipment and utilizing the latest in technology is of the utmost importance when it comes to patient safety and optimal outcomes.
What are your practice’s areas of expertise?
At my practice, we use the most up-to-date equipment available to provide the best outcomes. We utilize additional measures such as warming all of our patients, but in particular our body contouring patients who are even more sensitive to hypothermic environments. Efforts at minimizing blood loss and reducing operative times is also crucial to give the best outcomes in the safest manner possible.
You recently bought a DRE Torino EXL. What stood out about this surgical table as a good fit for your facility?
The versatility of this bed with regards to positioning was especially important in my selection of it. It is very quiet, powerful and flexible in a variety of patient positions, making the surgery easier and less strenuous on both surgeon and patient.
