#TechTipTuesday: Patient Monitors

March 8, 2021

By Kaylee McCaffrey, Biomedical Engineering Solutions Sales Specialist

It’s #TechTipTuesday! Welcome to our weekly series where we ask members of the biomedical community about their tips and recommendations for maintaining medical equipment. This week we’re asking, “What tips do you have when it comes to patient monitors?”

Using a Barcode Scanner with Philips Patient Monitors

This week, we asked Mai Sumlut, Senior Technician Supervisor at Avante Health Solutions’ San Clemente Center of Excellence, for his tips on integrating barcode scanner capabilities into existing Philips patient monitor setups. Read Mai’s advice below.

Within the last two months, we’ve had a couple customers call regarding the Philip Monitor’s scanner options. Most of the customers thought they needed a licensing option to use the Barcode scanner on their monitor. This isn’t true. Philips monitors already have the scanner option built in; you just need to select Barcode option from Patient ID setting. The following Monitors already have the scanner option:

  • Philip VSi Monitor
  • Philip VS2+
  • VS2
  • VS3
  • VS4
  • VM4
  • VM6
  • VM8

Here are the instructions on how to select the barcode scanner option from patient ID setting.

  1. Click on System Tool
  2. Click on System Admin
  3. Password “215”
  4. Patient ID setting
  5. Patient ID input A. Manual B. Standard Barcode C. Programmed Barcode (Select B. for Barcode Scanner)
  6. Reboot the unit and install the Barcode Scanner.
